Great Performance - 2 years of ownership and it just keeps getting better for me

Pros: -Better than any Ryzen for 90% of games (superior single-thread)
-Runs fairly cool and benchmarks almost 2X better than my old OC'd i7-2600k at stock settings
-Supports NVME MSATA drives, eliminating storage bottle-necks on performance (Ultra M.2 makes a noticable difference over my old Samsung SSDs)
- **UPDATE 2** Bought a new motherboard (went down to mini-ITX form factor) and case. The new motherboard was a Gigabyte Aorus, and I used their OC utility to auto-OC the CPU, and it OC'd to 5 GHz. The benchmark in Passmark jumped almost 2,000 points (from 17,000 to 19,000)! 2 hour stress tests kept the CPU well below 100*C (the Tcase/ thermal limits) with my Corsair 240mm closed loop cooler. Performance is 24/7 stable. These passmark benchmark scores of almost 19,000 are almost as high as a stock 9900K, and better than most Threadrippers. With the single thread rating, this thing is in beast mode. Prior to the Gigabyte board and OC utility, Crashes with GIANT parks in my favorite game (Planet Coaster) were commonplace, but now are a thing of the past.

Cons: -You need a good cooler (and motherboard). My old motherboard did not have a good O.C. utility, and my manual over-clocks were difficult. I basically got it to 4.9Ghz on my old motherboard. After actually REMOVING two of my 4 fans from my Corsair 240mm cooler, temps actually improved a little on my new motherboard. Intel is basically copying AMD and pushing this nearly to the "O.C." limit right out of the box. Thermal throttling on my motherboard was an issue at stock configuration (I disabled thermal throttling). The last two cores run substantively hotter than the other cores, showing how they were almost an afterthought which were tacked on to beat AMD's Ryzen CPU's.

Other Thoughts: Get an M.2 2280 near or above 3000Mbs + of write speed. Even a conventional SSD will be a bottleneck. I upgraded from a Samsung EVO and I feel the difference.

My past experience with my first ASRock MB was that getting just one core to 5GHz was very difficult (due to stability and/or thermal throttling on those last two cores). This could have partly been the motherboard to blame. I updated the firmware and disabled thermal throttling in UEFI and the issue went away, but a nearly 30*C temp difference between core 4-and- cores 5/6 was bad. This really shows that this was an Intel afterthought just to combat Ryzen and make people forget that there had been 3-generations without any substantive IPC improvement, and no significant generational leap in IPC since Sandy-bridge.

Most games and programs don't seem to care about cores as much as single-thread performance, but I am enjoying the benefits of multi-tasking. I am hoping that Ryzen and Coffee Lake finally shifts the paradigm and that future DX12/ Vulcan titles are able to really leverage all the cores. My hope was that the present upgrade over Sandy Bridge justified the purchase, and the extra cores would make it "future-proof".

My initial conclusion, 2-years ago when I bought this, was that, on the merits of gaming and 99% of normal use, unless you have money to burn in a pile, if you have an old Sandy Bridge/ Ivy Bridge i7"K" lying around.... The time to upgrade was NOT YET.

HOWEVER (UPDATE) Looking back, I have 180*degrees changed my opinion. This CPU costs about $360.00 and my old Sandy Bridge had been $270.00 when new. This CPU is good enough to do 4K HTC Vive Pro VR while multi-tasking if you wanted. My old argument was based on how little different the new CPU was from the "good-enough" 1080p experience of my old i7-2600K, but in hindsight, the difference between them is night and day. I have started playing with 3D-modeling and rendering, and have VR now, etc... There is just so much more I can do with this that would have been cumbersome or impossible with my older 2nd-gen.

Looking at this I see now that this is positioned at a price-point where it gives much better value than a 9700K, or a 9900K, and is better for gaming than a Ryzen. If you are looking to upgrade from anything older than a 7700K, I'd say that this is worth the money. Thanks to Ryzen's competition, Intel has given us the new Intel version of the "Mor Corez" paradigm shift, and for me there is no going back.

2 years later, I love this CPU more than ever before. It seems like I am on a journey to discover its potential, and it just keeps getting better.

Good buy for dollar

Pros: Great buy, was really a kick up from my older processor (4c8t 2.8g)
Runs great and never thermal throttles, even with Prime 95
Haven't found the limits of it (stock)

Cons: Runs HOT (but doesn't thermal throttle)
Gets 4.7g turbo on first 2 cores only, then downclocks the rest

Other Thoughts: Running this on a Maximus XI Hero Wifi board. Booted up first try. Runs good with my 360mm AIO, highest temps was 84* after an hour or so of Prime 95. Idled around 36ish depending on the cores. Eventually did a Delid and Conductonaut on both sides, now it idles around 28 depending on the core. It would turbo the first 2 cores to its max, then drop down every core after that. Overclocked this to 5ghz on all cores 24/7 @ 1.36v and no AVX drop, LLC is at 5 out of 8. Didn't win the silicone lottery, but got enough winnings to make my money back so to speak. This computer never turns off and is used for gaming and videos for a good 8 hours a day with no hiccups.

Fast but overpriced and runs Hot.

Pros: - Easy to get past 5.0Ghz with correct Overclock board
- works on most boards, but it is pointless to run it on Non Z Boards.
- Very Good Memory Compatibility

Cons: - Runs Hot, Since I7-6700 release, I7's run way hotter than ever before
- Price to Performance is bad
- I5-9400F has way more price to performance or Ryzen 2600
- Only use for these processors is for a 2080 Ti (But if you have a 2080 Ti, you probably have a 9900K
- It's more like a 125WTDP, 95WTDP is a joke.

Other Thoughts: I'd pair it with the lowest cost Z370 Board you can find + Liquid Cooler AIO.
Don't spend too much for no reason...
Just buy a I5-9400F, 2600, 1700 or 2700. Runs way cooler, much lower price and only like 5-10% performance difference in most games. Unless you have a 2080 Ti, this Cpu is waste of money.
Ryzen is also better for workstation use.
I am actually Xeon Fan Boy. So I know my stuff, because I know what carries the dollar further.

Fast cpu but very , very hot running.

Pros: Fast cpu out of the box but prepare yourself to go high end cooling for this fire breathing cpu as it runs extremely hot.

Cons: Hot , hot oh and did i say it runs hot ? The bad Intel thermal interface used on this cpus make them run extremely hot.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if i will keep it :/

Where to even start.....

Pros: This is the best cpu i have ever owned without a doubt. Its such a ____ing beast. I can run two runscape windows, steam, and run a tipple A title and still not even pass 75% use. This is serious overkill and you wont regret it even a tad. BUY IT NOW IF YOUR EVEN CONSIDERING AND CAN AFFORD IT!@!!!!!!!!!!@!@@!@!@!

Cons: NONE ITS INTEL

Powerful Processor, Amazing Speed

Pros: This CPU burns through everything I throw at it. I am using an AIO liquid cooler and only at the highest sustained workloads will the temp even approach 150 degrees F. Six cores / twelve threads makes this nicely future-proof, as most current software only uses a few cores, especially games.

Windows 10 flies on this CPU--paired with an NVMe SSD, gives a sweetly responsive system.

Cons: --Did not come with a CPU cooler but that's not an issue, I already had a fairly new liquid cooler.
--In most current software and pretty much all games, there is no difference in speed between 4 cores / 8 threads and 6 cores / 12 threads. On the other hand, while that's true today, it may well not remain true a few years from now...

Other Thoughts: This processor is overkill for most enthusiasts or gaming builders now, but it's nice to be a little future-proof, and I think it represents good value for its price.
